THE OAK BEDROOM

DESIGNED FOR LORD MONTAGU AT BEAULIEU PALACE HOUSE

As part of my final semester at University. Our main project was to redesign two bedrooms in Beaulieu palace house. Liasing with the owner, Lord Montagu, we came up with a design to transform his main bedroom called 'The oak Bedroom". The House is open to the public, so this would be a room many people will see as well as stay in. The requirements were that the famous oak pannelling would be kept as a feature in the room.

To understand the history, I researched into the Montagu family to make sure my depiction of this room was true to the heritage. Therefore transformed it into this classy, rich room. With a double bed, chaise lounge and spacious reading chair, it provides the perfect zone for a resting area. The large bay windo at the front of the room gives it great natural light, and gold chandeleirs decorate the ceilings for those darker evenings. The rich colour pallete complements the wooden feature but provides vibrancy to the room, with custom made rugs and cushions for the bay window, the space is fluid in its concept.

THE CONCEPT

MAKING THIS ROOM PERSONAL TO THE CLIENT

Research into your client is so important when conducting a residential project, it allows you to really hone in onto what is special to them and how this can impact their space. I found out through this research that Lord Montagu's father was a great lover of jazz. When he owned the estate he would hold jazz festivals in the beautiful gardens of Beaulieu estate and knew many renowned jazz artists. As he has sadly passed now, I wanted to commemorate his love for such a impactful culture.

To uphold the family history I created this space with hints to this concept. To present it in a classy, abstract way and still fit the theme of the rest of Bealieu Estate. The custom wallpaper represents some of jazz's first appearances. With the streets of new Orleans decorating the walls. The rich emerald, scarlet mustard touches represent the rich culture that jazz has. The overall idea was to create the perfect mix between high end and comfortable, and give visitors the experience of how jazz makes you feel.
